    Altec 411-8A

Seems like a decent price--need to be refoamed though. I looked up the specs and these look to be some serious Altec woofers as far as LF response (although not particularly efficient for Altecs). Anyone ever heard these? Would they work best with an 800 or 500 hz crossover (or even lower)?

500 Hz IMO,the 411's only go out to 1000Hz they are a medium efficiency woofer and why you need to use the 30904 network with Altec compression drivers.

One Altec speaker these came in was the Barcelona's 873A and they were crossed at 500 Hz...

They should have made the Barcelona with a 511E and 288....

are you saying that the 411's play strong enough to warrant the 288, or that the 288 is better at 500 hz?

    Re: Altec 411-8A

I would say the latter.Dunno I think the large format with the 411 may be too much HF as the 411 needs the 30904 to attenuate the horn so it isn't so much louder than the woofer. The 411 needs this attenuator for a small format driver so with the large .... OG should know better than I though. Watcha Think OG ?

Attenuation isn't hard. But I think the Barcelona needed a stronger mid.

i thought the 30904 dampened the horn from 1000 to 5k or something like that to get more high frequency extension?

    Re: Altec 411-8A

AFAIK, it takes dual 411s to keep up with a CD horn EQ'd 511/288 based on my one time audition of a pair of 9848 studio monitors, so to shelve this horn combo down to one 411 would probably leave no real dynamic headroom at low distortion.

No they are used because the 411 is a medium efficiency woofer and is need to mate them with the high efficiency compression drivers to help shelve the HF compression drivers an extra -5-10 dB I think. The 30904 has a Zobel in it.Art J. put these diagrams together awhile back..
